Early life

John Karl Fetterman was born August 15, 1969, in Reading, Pennsylvania, to Karl and Susan Fetterman.

The family moved to York suburbs, P.A, where Fetterman grew up, and his father became a partner at an insurance firm. Growing up, he had a self-described privileged upbringing.

Education and Early Career

Fetterman attended Albright College, his father's alma mater, and graduated in 1991 with a bachelor’s degree in finance. 

For two years, Fetterman worked in Pittsburgh as a risk-management underwriter for Chubb. He later attended the University of Connecticut (UConn) and received a Master of Business Administration (MBA) in 1993.

While at UConn, Fetterman lost his best friend, who died in a car accident, profoundly impacting his life. 

Fetterman volunteered at the Big Brothers Big Sisters of America. While there, he was paired with an 8-year-old boy whose parents died of AIDS. John promised to care for him after his mother died.

In 1995, Fetterman joined AmeriCorps and taught Pittsburgh GED students in 2001 in an Out-of-School-Youth Program.

In 1999, Fetterman received a Master of Public Policy from Kennedy School at Harvard University.

Mayor of Braddock (2006–2019)

In 2004, Fetterman’s work with AmeriCorps led him to move to Braddock.

In 2005 he ran for mayor of Braddock and succeeded. He served as part-time mayor of Braddock and full-time director of the city's youth program.

Fetterman became a full-time mayor of Braddock in 2006. As mayor, Fetterman tried to bring life back to the old steel town and founded a nonprofit organization, Braddock Redux, which he used to acquire properties in Braddock.
