Michael Oher’s Early Life
Michael Jerome Oher is an American football player. He was born on May 28, 1986, in Memphis, Tennessee. His father, Michael Jerome Williams, spent a lot of time in prison, while his mother, Denise Oher, was an alcoholic and cocaine addict.
Oher’s parents paid little attention to his needs. He repeated first and second grades and switched many schools throughout his education, perhaps because of a lack of discipline and proper care.
At age 7, Michael was placed in foster care. Micheal lived in various foster homes for the next few years and often had no home at all. Things changed for Michael when Sean Tuohy (a millionaire sports commentator) and his wife Leigh Anne Tuohy (a businesswoman) took the then 17-year Michael in.
The couple hired a tutor to help Michael with schoolwork. Soon after, Oher started playing football. Over the next few years, Oher upped his game. The problem? His grades were too low to get accepted to an NCAA program.
Michael was up for the challenge, though. He took Brigham Young University’s online classes and raised his grades to As to increase his GPA above the required minimum. He received scholarships from various universities, including Auburn, Alabama, and Tennessee, but he chose to play college football with Ole Miss Rebels at the University of Mississippi.

In 2008, Michael decided to leave school to enter the 2008 NFL Draft but withdrew just two days after the announcement. However, the Ravens selected him in the first round of the 2009 NFL Draft, and that’s how Michael started his professional football career.

Oher’s contract with the Titans ended on February 5, 2015, and just a month later, he signed a two-year contract with Carolina Panthers for $7 million. Panthers extended Oher’s contract by 3 years in June 2016 for $21.6 million with $8 million guaranteed.
After playing eight seasons in the NFL, Michael was released by the Panthers because of a failed physical in 2017.
However, Michael continues to generate income from other sources. In addition to football, Michael also earns royalties from the movie The Blind Side.
Michael bought a $1.3 million mansion in 2014. The 8,126-square-foot home is spread across 2.1 acres. The property’s value has since appreciated greatly, though Michael hasn’t listed the property.

Michael has faced the challenges he’s trying to solve with the Good Deeds app. As Michael explained to People:
"When I started to see that I had two or three pair of shoes to wear to school and I had multiple pants, my mental health started getting stronger," says Oher. "I could focus on school, and my grades started to go up. I was eating, so I could focus on other things rather than being hungry, that's when I really started to excel.”
In addition to the Good Deeds app, Michael helps disadvantaged youth through his Nashville-based nonprofit Beat the Odds. The organization aims to help youth with higher education, career, and health, among other things.
