Who is Eminem?

Eminem, also known as Slim Shady, is a world-renowned rap artist. His humble beginnings, controversial lyrics, and prolific songwriting career have inspired many upcoming artists. He has sold over 220 million records across the world.

Early Life

Born on October 17, 1972, Marshall Mathers grew up with his 17-year-old single mother. His father left for Canada with another family, abandoning baby Marshall and his mother. Marshall endured a troubled childhood moving between different locations in Detroit and Missouri. He also sustained injuries from several occasions of bullying and beating.

Though he struggled academically, he took a peculiar interest in studying the English language. He always did well in the subject and this helped him build the vocabulary of his popular lyrics and rap cadence. He failed the 9th grade 3 times and eventually dropped out of school at age 17.

The future hip-hop star hoped to be a comic book artist. He later changed his mind after listening to Reckless, featuring Ice-T. As a teen, he worked odd jobs to support his mom. This didn’t stop him from writing songs and taking part in freestyle rap contests, which became the foundation of his hip-hop career.

Music Career

14-year-old Marshall started rapping with his friend, Mike Ruby. He opted for the nickname M&M which later evolved into Eminem. The duo took part in Hip-Hop Shop on West 7 Mile. As his popularity grew, rap groups like D12 and Soul Intent offered to work with him.

1n 1996, released his debut album, Infinite, which was a flop but he continued in the entertainment industry. He later adopted his alternate personality, Slim Shady, which rapped about sex, murder, rape, and violence.

Upon hearing some music by ‘Slim Shady’, Dr. Dre, founder of Aftermath Entertainment and Beats, picked interest in the growing rap artist in 1996. By 1998, Eminem released Slim Shady LP, his second studio album and main label debut.

Eminem has since churned out an array of studio albums including The Marshall Mathers (2000), Relapse: Refill (2010), Revival (2018), and Music to be Murdered by (2020).

Joining Bassmint Productions

As Marshall's popularity grew, he joined Bassmint Productions. This later became known as Soul Intent. The group disbanded in 1995.

Eminem Meets Dr. Dre

In 1998, Eminem traveled to Los Angeles and took part in the Rap Olympics. Though he placed second, an Interscope Records staff member enjoyed his music and shared it with Jimmy Iovine. Dr. Dre, the founder of Aftermath Entertainment, heard it and found Eminem. The talented rapper signed a deal with Dre's record label to improve and produce The Slim Shady EP with Dr. Dre as Executive Producer. Released in 1999, The Slim Shady LP was a huge success and won the renowned singer a Grammy.

The Slim Shady EP

The Slim Shady EP was Eminem’s debut and singular extended play. With the release, he secured the attention of Jimmy Iovine and Dr. Dre. This led to his big break in the entertainment industry. Eminem explored his alter ego, Slim Shady, in this release and spoke on themes like violence, drugs, and sex using storytelling. His re-recorded and newly produced The Slim Shady LP turned out to be a huge success.

Establishing Himself as a Star

The hip-hop star released The Marshall Mathers LP which sold over 21 million records. His next album, The Eminem Show, sold over 27 million copies.

Eminem has worked with many top-notch musicians like Rihanna, Dr. Dre, Ed Sheeran, and Drake

In 2022, Eminem performed "Lose Yourself" during the Super Bowl Halftime Show alongside hip-hop icons, Dr. Dre, Snoop Dog, Mary J Blige, 50 Cent, and Kendrick Lamar.

He makes $20 million or so in a non-tour year and is arguably one of the highest-paid entertainers globally.
