Who is Jackie Chan?

Jackie Chan is a Hong Kong-born Chinese movie star synonymous with Kung-Fu, action, stunt performing, and martial-art movies. Chan has acted since the 1960s, performing in more than 150 films to become one of the most popular action film stars of all time. Chan got his breakthrough movie role in the late 1970s, which followed many of his film years as a director. A switch to Hollywood with the hit Rush Hour helped cement Jackie Chan as one of the most famous actors ever.

Early Life

Jackie Chan was born Chan Kong-Sang on April 7, 1954, in Hong Kong, China. His parents moved to Australia to find new jobs when he was 7, leaving Chan behind to study at the Chinese Opera Research Institute in Hong Kong.

For 10 years, Chan studied drama, martial arts, acrobatics, singing, and acting. When he was only 8, Chan appeared in his first film, the Cantonese feature Big and Little Wong Tin Bar (1962).

Chan joined his parents in Canberra, Australia, in 1971, where he briefly attended Dickson College and worked as a construction worker. Chan’s fellow builder, Jack, took him in, which earned Chan the nickname "Little Jack" and eventually Jackie Chan, which has stuck with him ever since.

Upon graduating (1971), Chan started working as an acrobat and a movie stuntman. His most notable stunt film was Fist of Fury (1972), starring  Bruce Lee, for which he reportedly had the highest fall in the history of the Chinese film industry - 40 ft.

Early Career

Chan started appearing in movies as early as age five, and his biggest early role came at age eight in the movie Big and Little Wong Tin Bar. After other minor roles, Chan was signed to Great Earth Film Company, which helped him launch his career.

Through Great Earth, Chan worked as a stuntman in Bruce Lee's legendary films, Fist of Fury and Enter the Dragon. This led to his first-ever starring role in Little Tiger of Canton (1973).

After Lee's unexpected death in 1973, Chan was singled out as his likely successor thanks to his acrobatics and martial arts. He starred in kung fu movies with director Lo Wei, who wanted to make him the next Bruce Lee. The collaboration was mostly unsuccessful and ended in the late 1970s.

To create his image and acting formula, Chan blended his martial arts abilities with impressive nerve. Jackie Chan insisted on performing all of his stunts. He brings a sense of screwball physical comedy to his work.

Breakthrough

Chan's breakthrough came when he used his trademark martial-art-comedic skills in The Snake in the Eagle's Shadow (1978), which pioneered the comedic Kung-Fu genre. He then took Hong Kong film by storm with his first kung fu comedy, the now-classic Drunken Master (1978).

By completing his stunt choreography, Jackie Chan could fully show off his impressive abilities. After several other similar films, such as:

  • The Fearless Hyena (1979)
  • Half a Loaf of Kung Fu (1980)
  • The Young Master (1980)

Chan was ready to take on the international film industry.

Through Golden Harvest, Lee's old production company, Chan soon became the highest-paid actor in Hong Kong and an international star throughout Asia.

Movie Empire

In Hong Kong, Chan also produced impressive action comedies such as:

  • Project A (1983)
  • Police Story (1985)
  • Armor of God (1986)
  • Mr. Canton and Lady Rose (1989)
  • A Pocketful of Miracles (1961)

In 1986, he founded his own production company, Golden Way, and a modeling/casting agency, Jackie's Angels, to recruit talent for his films. He then founded the Jackie Chan Stuntmen Association, where he trained and provided medical coverage for its members. While filming Armor of God, Chan reportedly fractured his skull after falling more than 40 feet.

During this time, he produced other films like Crime Story (1993) and made several sequels to Police Story and Drunken Master.

International Success and Hollywood

In the early 1980s, Chan tried his luck in Hollywood, with little success in the films The Big Brawl (1980) and The Cannonball Run (1982 and 1984 sequel). He returned to Hong Kong, and his bold and daring stunts gained the attention of an international audience.

In 1995, Chan created his comic book character, Jackie Chan's Spartan X, which hit newsstands in Asia and the U.S. That year, Quentin Tarantino, fresh off the success of Pulp Fiction (1994), presented Chan with a Lifetime Achievement Award at the MTV Movie Awards.

Chan then stormed the world with his best performance in the Rumble in the Bronx (1996), which hit in America, and Jackie Chan arrived in Hollywood in fashion. It also debuted two previous Chan films, Crime Story and Drunken Master II, into Hollywood.

After two more efforts in Hollywood, Jackie Chan's First Strike (1997) and Mr. Nice Guy (1998), Chan scored another box-office hit with Rush Hour (1998). That one made him a household name in Hollywood. Chan then starred in:

  • Shanghai Noon (2000)
  • Rush Hour 2 (2001)
  • The Tuxedo (2002)
  • Shanghai Knights (2003)
  • The Medallion (2003)
  • Around the World in 80 Days (2004)

Seeking greater artistic control over his films, Chan co-founded JCE Movies Ltd. (2004). There he produced successful flicks like New Police Story (2004), The Myth (2005), and Rob-B-Hood (2006).

Some of Chan's other recent works include:
